NOTES

Nearshore Reefs and Offshore Mahi Update

Halifax River - Volusia, FL

The spring transition is in full swing here in Port Orange, and the water temperatures are climbing steadily. This past week has shown a consistent bite both on the reefs and out in the deeper blue water. With the Atlantic grouper season now open as of May 1st, we have seen a significant increase in bottom activity, making it a great time to schedule an offshore fishing charter in Port Orange, FL.

Nearshore and Reef Activity The nearshore reefs, located between 8 and 20 miles out, are currently holding a variety of species. We are seeing plenty of Lane Snapper and Mangrove Snapper coming over the rails on light tackle. King Mackerel have also arrived in good numbers; we are finding success by slow-trolling live bait over structure. For those looking for a heavy pull, the Shark fishing in Port Orange, FL has been reliable, with several large Blacktips active on the reef edges.

Offshore and Deep Water On our longer trips aboard the Sea Hunt, we have been pushing out to the 40-mile mark. The Mahi Mahi are beginning their seasonal migration, and we have found success looking for weed lines and floating debris. Trolling a spread of ballyhoo has been the most effective method this week. We are also seeing some early Sailfish activity and the occasional Wahoo on the high-speed troll. Bottom fishing in the deep water has produced solid Red Grouper and Vermilion Snapper for those willing to put in the time.

Inshore and Backwater Conditions The backwater and intercoastal waterways are warming up, which has the Redfish and Snook moving toward the docks and mangroves. Our 18.5-foot flats boat has been perfect for reaching these shallow spots. The evening bite under the dock lights remains strong, especially for anglers using artificial lures or live shrimp.

Captain’s Tip for the Week As the sun gets higher and the water clears, fluorocarbon leaders are becoming essential for the more cautious snapper on the reefs. We are also seeing a lot of bait schools moving through the inlet, so keeping a cast net ready is a must.

If you are looking for a Port Orange fishing guide who knows where the fish are holding during this spring shift, now is the time to get on the water. Whether you want a family day near the coast or a full day chasing big game offshore, Nauti-Cartel Charters is ready to put you on the fish.
